Small Stream Fishing
Are you more comfortable fishing in a bit less water?
Maybe your fondest memories growing up were spent on creeks and streams no wider than a rods length? In addition to our larger Blue Ribbon Streams, our area abounds with smaller streams and creeks that are chuck full of rainbows and brook trout that are eager to rise to a floating fly.
Here’s just a few to wet your whistle!
Poindexter Slough is a fine meadow stream with spring creek characteristics. It meanders its way through hay fields before joining the Beaverhead River just south of Dillon MT. Poindexter boasts excellent hatches with a good population of brown trout in the 12 to 15 inch range.
The North Fork of the Big Hole River is located in the upper Big Hole Valley near Wisdom Montana and it is a delight to fish! There won’t be many tackle busters here but there are plenty of 10 to 14 inch rainbows, cutthroats and brookies that can’t resist any type of small dry fly. The scenery is spectacular! It is the icing on the cake as you spend your day “creek pickin” the North Fork.
Canyon Creek, located in the Pioneer Range, is a small mountain stream just minutes from our lodge. The creek is full of small cutthroats that reach 12 inches in length. You won’t catch any lunkers here but the solitude and scenery is therapeutic.
LeMarche Creek is laced with beaver ponds as it makes its way down the south-facing slopes of the Pintlar Range in the upper Big Hole Valley. It is an attractive creek that flows through a gorgeous creek bottom before joining up with the Big Hole. Brook trout, cutthroats and a sprinkling of small rainbows, ever alert to heavy footsteps, will make a play for your dry fly if you’re careful.
